Addressing Learning Outcomes
Within a thematic project framework teachers encourage, promote, guide and support the acquisition of age and developmentally appropriate skills, knowledge and attitudes using the Alberta Program of Studies as the guiding document. Students are encouraged to take ownership of their learning through choice and through teachers’ openness in being willing to consider students’ suggestions for alternative ways of demonstrating learner outcomes.
All subject areas are integrated within the theme or project approach and are not be taught in a stand alone or discrete manner. However, when the need arises to assist a student(s) in building age appropriate skills outside of the context of the current theme or project teachers will do so. Teachers are trusted to use their professional judgment in deciding when this is necessary and will attempt to minimize the need for such actions.
Success is based on a diverse definition of learning. Satisfaction, completion and achievement are the main indicators used to gage success.
Assessment
Teachers assess learning with the intention of:
- celebrating growth
- assisting the child in extending their learning in appropriate and enriching ways
- documenting the addressing of the Alberta Program of Studies learner expectations
- tracking student progress in written form (parents are welcome to view)
- ascertaining, at year end, the grade level and level of achievement for each student in language arts and mathematics
- sharing their findings with the student’s family through some or all of the following ways
- parent/teacher conferences
- casual discussions and frequent contact
- progress reports
Caraway families may choose the manner in which they would like the teacher to share his/her perceptions of the growth and the learning that has taken place. Those who choose not to have written progress reports must sign a waiver form.
