Roles and Responsibilities
Students
Students are encouraged to choose their own sub areas of investigation. The students’ questions and interests drive their explorations. Teachers facilitate the uncovering, framing, initiating of areas of study. Choice of project topic include:
- appropriate resources being available (i.e. time, supplies, adult assistance where necessary, etc.)
- the students’ interest in working alone or in collaboration with others
Students will be assisted in:
- learning to know themselves better and becoming increasingly self-directed, self-managed and accountable
- increasing their knowledge base
- building and refining their sense of community, understanding of democracy and sensitivity to social justice issues
- working collaboratively
- recognizing and articulating their priorities and internalizing the importance of process
- viewing errors or miscalculations as learning opportunities not mistakes
- learning to use of a variety of tools and organizational techniques (such as 3-2-1) designed to promote and enhance their thinking skills
- learning from the projects done by others in their learning community
- determining the way to present/represent their learning
- recognizing and communicating how they know it is the end of their project
The classroom may have multiple projects in progress at any one time. Student choice of a project will need to include demonstrating how the project is connected to the classroom theme
